In the quiet farming community of Phillip, Mississippi, a shocking act of violence shattered the peace on September 20, 1961. On that day, 68-year-old Mary Shuttle was killed by gunfire. She was not the only person to lose her life in this violent incident. Four other individuals, Effie Franklin, Isaac Truell, age 66, John Trotter, age 74, and Mandy Griffin, age 65, were also killed.
