On January 2, 1981, 28-year-old Patrolman Lawrence Dale Coker of the Heidelberg Police Department in Mississippi was fatally shot during a high-speed traffic stop. After serving with the department for only two weeks, Patrolman Coker pursued a vehicle exceeding 100 mph. Upon stopping the car and approaching it, the driver leaned out of the window and fired a .44 caliber handgun, striking Patrolman Coker in the chest.
