In the late summer of 1992, a dedicated law enforcement officer's life was tragically cut short in Magnolia, Mississippi. Investigator Thomas Wayne Daughdrill, a 41-year-old male, was a respected figure in his community, having served with the Pike County Sheriff's Office for over nine years. His commitment to public service also included previous tenures with the McComb and Pearl Police Departments.
By all accounts, he was a family man, survived by his wife and four children.
On August 26, 1992, a seemingly routine call about a burglary in progress set in motion a devastating chain of events. Responding to the alert off of Clark Street, officers encountered a 15-year-old boy armed with both a shotgun and a pistol. When confronted and told to stop, the young suspect fled, taking refuge inside a barn on West Myrtle Street. The situation quickly escalated when one of the officers who entered the barn was met with gunfire, sustaining a wound to the shoulder.
As Investigator Daughdrill and his fellow officers worked to establish a secure perimeter around the barn, the teenage suspect emerged and opened fire with a 20-gauge shotgun. A blast struck Investigator Daughdrill in the chest, inflicting a fatal wound. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the officers managed to wound the young assailant, taking him into custody.
Following the tragic incident, the 15-year-old suspect was charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Investigator Thomas Wayne Daughdrill. The community mourned the loss of a devoted officer, and the wheels of justice began to turn for the young man accused of ending his life. The case proceeded through the legal system to address the violent death of the seasoned investigator.
