In the spring of 2015, a violent outburst in Corinth, Mississippi, claimed the life of 22-year-old Deonta Dwayne Herman. The fatal incident unfolded on the evening of Saturday, April 4th, at the Nashway Apartments. Authorities reported that the scene was chaotic, with a large crowd of over 100 people gathered when a barrage of gunfire erupted. An estimated 50 to 80 shots were fired, creating a scene of panic and disarray.
When the violence subsided, Herman was discovered deceased in a
yard behind the apartment complex. Another man, 25-year-old Ahmarus Rakim Swinney, was also fatally wounded in the shootout. Swinney was found in the parking lot and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. Investigators at the scene noted that Herman was armed at the time of the incident, while Swinney was not.
The Corinth Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation, which they characterized as stemming from gang-related activities. The sheer number of shots fired and the large crowd presented immediate challenges to investigators, who received conflicting accounts of the events that transpired. The investigation into the double homicide led to progress in the following months.
An Alcorn County Grand Jury handed down indictments against two men in connection with the deadly shooting. Marcus McGaha, 27, and Cedric Gunn, also 27, were each indicted on one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder for their alleged roles in the incident that ended the lives of both Deonta Dwayne Herman and Ahmarus Rakim Swinney.
