In the summer of 2015, the life of 21-year-old William 'Dalton' O'Meara was cut tragically short in a violent encounter in Picayune, Mississippi. A former placekicker for Picayune High School, O'Meara was fatally shot on the evening of June 18, 2015. The young man, who was a lifetime resident of Pearl River County, worked as a granite installer.
The incident unfolded on Richardson Road, where O'Meara lived in a mobile home behind the residence of his neighbor, 49-year-old Darin K. Galmiche. Witnesses reported a history of friction between the two men. On that fateful evening, as O'Meara drove up to his home with his fiancée and her young child, Galmiche emerged from his house in an agitated state. A verbal confrontation quickly escalated when Galmiche produced a rifle and fired several shots at O'Meara, striking him at least once. Despite being rushed to a hospital, O'Meara succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
Following the shooting, Darin K. Galmiche was arrested. In October 2015, he pleaded guilty to a charge of depraved-heart murder in a Pearl River County courtroom. Circuit Judge Anthony Mozingo sentenced Galmiche to 40 years for the murder of Dalton O'Meara. The sentence stipulated that Galmiche would serve 20 years in prison, with the remaining 20 years to be spent under post-release supervision.
