In the small town of Kilmichael, Mississippi, the life of 32-year-old Marquita Hill was tragically cut short on April 27, 2016. Hill, a mother, was shot and killed by her former boyfriend, 40-year-old Odell Hallmon, in an act of domestic violence that also claimed the lives of her 59-year-old mother, Carolyn Ann Sanders, and 32-year-old Kenneth C. Loggins. The violent rampage unfolded after Hill had ended her relationship with Hallmon and put him out of their shared home less than a month prior.
The events of that early morning were nothing short of horrific. Hallmon went to Hill's residence and, in a fit of rage, opened fire. Tragically, Marquita Hill and her mother were killed at the scene. In a harrowing turn of events, Marquita's 12-year-old son was also present in the home at the time of the shooting. He managed to hide in a closet, and though a shot was fired in his direction, he was physically unharmed. After killing Hill and her mother, Hallmon continued his deadly spree, driving to another location in Kilmichael where he shot and wounded another man, Marcus Brown. From there, he traveled approximately 11 miles to the nearby town of Winona and fatally shot Kenneth C. Loggins.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly led to Odell Hallmon as the sole suspect. His motive appeared to stem from domestic jealousy and was also linked to drug dealing. In a remarkably swift resolution to the case, Hallmon pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder just two weeks after the killings. In addition to the murder charges, he also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the shooting of Marcus Brown and to being a felon in possession of a firearm. With a history of felony convictions that already amounted to over 15 years in prison, Hallmon was sentenced as a habitual offender. Montgomery County Circuit Judge Joey Loper handed down three life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders, an additional 20 years for the assault, and 10 years for the firearm charge, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
