In the quiet community of Kilmichael, Mississippi, a devastating series of events unfolded in the pre-dawn hours of April 27, 2016, leaving a family and community shattered. Carolyn Ann Sanders, a 59-year-old woman, became a victim of a violent rampage that would ultimately claim three lives.
The tragedy began when Odell Hallmon, the 40-year-old ex-boyfriend of Sanders' daughter, Marquita Hill, forced his way into their Kilmichael home. In a fit of rage, fueled by the belief that Hill was seeing another man, Hallmon opened fire, killing both Carolyn Sanders and 32-year-old Marquita. The horror of the situation was compounded by the presence of Marquita and Hallmon's 12-year-old son, who was in the house at the time of the murders. Hallmon even fired a shot into the closet where his son was hiding, though the boy was not physically harmed.
Hallmon's violence did not end there. He then drove to another residence in Kilmichael and shot Marcus Brown five times; Brown survived the attack. Continuing his deadly path, Hallmon proceeded to Winona, a town about 11 miles away, where he shot and killed 32-year-old Kenneth C. Loggins.
In the aftermath of the triple homicide, Odell Hallmon turned himself in to law enforcement. Just two weeks after the shootings, he pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A Montgomery County Circuit Judge sentenced Hallmon to three life sentences for the murders, in addition to 20 years for the assault and 10 years for the gun charge, ensuring he would never be eligible for parole.
