In the summer of 2016, the quiet community of Union, Mississippi, was shaken by a violent incident that claimed the life of 47-year-old Hosey Campbell Jr. and another young man. The events of Friday, July 1, 2016, began with a verbal altercation that, by evening, had spiraled into a fatal shooting.
Earlier in the day, a dispute had broken out among a group of individuals, leading to a physical fight.
While the initial confrontation dissipated, tensions simmered, and the groups reconvened later that night on Mason Street. Around 9:30 p.m., the argument reignited, and this time, the conflict escalated to the use of firearms.
In the ensuing violence, Hosey Campbell Jr. was shot and pronounced dead at the scene by the Newton County Coroner. A second victim, 24-year-old Billy Talley, also of Union, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Laird's Hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. A third individual was also wounded in the shooting but was treated for their injuries and subsequently released from the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the double homicide, the Union Police Department, with assistance from the Newton County Sheriff's Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, launched a thorough investigation. Authorities conducted more than 20 interviews to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the killings. The case remains unresolved, with no publicly identified suspects or reports of charges being filed in the years that have followed.
