In the small community of McAdams, Mississippi, a tragic story unfolded on the night of November 12, 2016, ending the life of 24-year-old Zackary Flanagan. Flanagan, along with his 26-year-old girlfriend LaBrandice Deshon Harvey, was shot and killed in a violent encounter that also left a third individual wounded. The incident was rooted in a past relationship, as the man responsible for the double homicide was Harvey's ex-boyfriend.
The Attala County Sheriff's Department swiftly
identified a suspect, arresting 25-year-old Marcus D. Malone on the very same night of the shootings. The investigation revealed that Malone and Harvey had children together, and the motive for the fatal attack appeared to stem from Harvey's new relationship with Flanagan. Malone was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Flanagan and Harvey, and an additional count of aggravated assault for the injury sustained by the third victim.
In October 2018, Marcus D. Malone, then 27, appeared in Attala County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to the charges against him. In a plea agreement, the initial first-degree murder charges were reduced to second-degree murder. Malone received two concurrent 40-year sentences for the murders of Zackary Flanagan and LaBrandice Harvey. He was also given a concurrent 20-year sentence for the aggravated assault of the third individual. Prior to his plea, Malone underwent a competency evaluation and was deemed fit to stand trial. His guilty plea brought a legal conclusion to the case that had tragically cut short the lives of two young people.
