In the summer of 2017, the life of 34-year-old Ebony Garcia was tragically cut short in a violent act of domestic violence in Batesville, Mississippi. On the evening of July 29th, Garcia was at a friend's home on Fogg Road when she was fatally shot. The incident stemmed from a dispute with her ex-boyfriend, Craig Harris.
Harris had arrived at the residence and confronted Garcia about her new relationship.
When she declined to discuss the matter with him, Harris became agitated and shot her with a 9mm pistol. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Garcia was pronounced dead inside the home.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a manhunt for Craig Harris was initiated by the Panola County Sheriff's Department, involving numerous officers and a canine unit. The search concluded the following day when Harris turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with capital murder for the death of Ebony Garcia.
As the case proceeded through the justice system, Harris ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. The plea was accepted by Batesville Circuit Court Judge Jimmy McClure. Harris was scheduled for sentencing on March 22, 2018, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic disputes within the community.
