In the late morning of a December day in Picayune, Mississippi, a confrontation on a street corner tragically cut short the life of 19-year-old Sarai Bagley. The young woman, a resident of Picayune, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. The events that led to her untimely death began to unfold around 10:22 a.m.
at the intersection of Bender and Beech streets.
According to police reports, Bagley flagged down an SUV in which 18-year-old Marlos Jones was a passenger and 24-year-old Kalista Turner was the driver. An argument erupted between Bagley and Jones, prompting Jones to exit the vehicle. After the verbal altercation, Jones returned to the SUV. As they prepared to leave, Bagley reportedly approached the passenger side window and began to strike Jones. It was at this point that Jones is said to have picked up a 9mm pistol and shot Bagley in the chest.
Following the shooting, Bagley was transported to Highland Community Hospital in a private vehicle, but she ultimately succumbed to her injury. In a surprising turn, Jones and Turner drove to the Picayune Police Department and turned themselves in. A search of their vehicle revealed the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, an AK-47, two shell casings, and marijuana.
As a result of the investigation, Marlos Jones was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and possession of marijuana. Kalista Turner was arrested for possession of marijuana. Another passenger who was in the back seat of the SUV was not charged. Funeral services for Sa'rai 'Kiwi' LaMyrah Bagley were held the following week at Greater Emmanuel Baptist Church, as her friends and family mourned the sudden and violent end to her young life.
