In the early evening of January 3, 2018, 19-year-old Laquisha Marshall was driven by private vehicle to Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. She had sustained a gunshot wound. The shooting occurred within the city limits of Oxford, in the parking lot of the Burger King where she was employed. The incident took place while she was in a car with three other people.
An investigation by the Oxford Police Department determined that Marshall was struck in the back by a bullet that was discharged from a gun belonging to 22-year-old Jadarius Harmon of Taylor, a friend and coworker of Marshall's who was sitting behind her in the vehicle. The bullet traveled through the seat before hitting her. Marshall was subsequently airlifted to The Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving. Authorities indicated that the shooting appeared to have been accidental.
Following the investigation, Jadarius Harmon was arrested in connection with the shooting. He was formally charged with manslaughter-culpable negligence. A Justice Court Judge set his bond at $10,000, and he was booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center. In the wake of her death, a GoFundMe page was established by a family member to assist with burial expenses, and a local funeral home later announced it would be donating the full funeral services for the 2017 Lafayette High School graduate.
