A celebration of life turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy on the night of March 1, 2019, in Carrollton, Mississippi, ending in the death of 38-year-old Brooks Hooker Harrell and two others. Brooks, a registered nurse, and her husband, 44-year-old Jim Harrell, were hosting a birthday party at their home for a friend, 27-year-old Marlee Jones Barnhill.
The festive evening took a dark turn when Marlee's husband, Michael Martin Barnhill, became intoxicated and aggressive.
The conflict escalated when Marlee, attempting to prevent her husband from driving drunk, refused to give him the keys to their vehicle. Enraged, Michael Barnhill retrieved a. 40 caliber handgun from his truck. He returned to the gathering, slapped a cigarette from his wife's hand, and then shot her in the chest. When Jim Harrell moved to intervene and help Marlee, Barnhill shot him as well. Brooks was fatally shot as she tried to come to the aid of her husband and their friend. While her husband and Marlee were pronounced dead at the scene, Brooks was critically wounded and died as paramedics were preparing to airlift her to a hospital. Two other guests at the party managed to escape the gunfire and heroically protected the Harrells' 10-year-old son, who was asleep inside the house, by hiding with him in a closet until help arrived.
Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of shots fired just before midnight. After the shooting, Michael Barnhill briefly left the residence. He later returned to the scene, initially pretending to be unaware of what had transpired. However, the surviving witnesses immediately identified him as the shooter, and he was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
Michael Martin Barnhill was arrested and charged with three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was held without bond at the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility. In October 2019, a grand jury indicted him on a capital murder charge. To avoid a potential death penalty, Barnhill entered into a plea agreement. In November 2019, he pleaded guilty to the murders of his wife, Marlee Barnhill, as well as Jim and Brooks Harrell. The judge sentenced him to serve three consecutive life sentences, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the devastating events of that night.
