In the small town of Tutwiler, Mississippi, the life of 27-year-old O'Aubrey Hilson Jr. was brought to a violent and tragic end on March 29, 2021. The young man was discovered deceased in his residence on Second Street by his mother. After being unable to reach her son throughout the day, she went to his home and was forced to make her own way inside, where she found him in his bedroom.
An investigation into his death revealed a chilling scene.
The Tallahatchie County Coroner confirmed that Hilson had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Evidence at the scene indicated that the fatal shots were fired from outside the house, through his bedroom window. Investigators found shell casings of different calibers, suggesting the involvement of at least two shooters. A police officer on patrol had reportedly heard gunshots in the vicinity around 4:30 a.m. that morning but did not observe any suspicious activity at the time. The case drew the attention of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Tutwiler Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, who launched an extensive inquiry into the homicide.
For three years, the case remained a subject of intense investigation. Then, a significant breakthrough occurred. Authorities announced the arrest of 25-year-old Jakerrius Jachun Gill, also a resident of Tutwiler. He was taken into custody and charged with the murder of O'Aubrey Hilson Jr. According to the police chief, Gill is accused of firing the shots through the bedroom window while Hilson was in his bed. Following his arrest, Gill was held on a bond of $850,000. While the arrest marked a crucial development in the case, a motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed to the public.
