In the summer of 2021, a trip to purchase junked cars ended in tragedy for Ellis Ray Magee Jr., a 33-year-old male from Liberty, Mississippi. On June 4th, Magee was on Starnes Road, just outside of McComb, when he was confronted by a neighbor. An apparent struggle ensued, and Magee was shot multiple times with a. 40-caliber Glock handgun, resulting in his death at the scene.
In the weeks that followed, frustration mounted for Magee's family as no arrests were made in connection with his
killing. Family members voiced their distress and anger over the lack of information they were receiving from the Pike County Sheriff's Department. They grew concerned that a claim of self-defense was being considered by the authorities. Seeking answers and action, a cousin of Magee addressed the Pike County supervisors, expressing the family's pain and their feeling of being left in the dark by investigators.
In response to the family's public plea for information, the Pike County Sheriff assured them that the investigation was far from closed and that his primary contact regarding the case was Magee's wife. The District Attorney confirmed that the case would be presented to a grand jury to determine if any charges would be filed. However, the outcome of that grand jury proceeding and whether any arrests were ultimately made in the death of Ellis Ray Magee Jr. remains unclear.
