In the early evening of February 5, 2024, tragedy struck in McComb, Mississippi, when 20-year-old Andra Cotton was fatally shot. The incident, which also left 18-year-old Brandon Celestine with a gunshot wound to his hand, unfolded at a residence on Avenue D. Cotton succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led law enforcement to identify two teenage suspects: 17-year-old Ladarius Magee and 17-year-old Bryson Brumfield.
Magee was apprehended and taken into custody in February. Brumfield, however, remained at large for nearly two months. His time as a fugitive came to an end in late March when authorities, acting on a tip, located the vehicle he was in. Following a foot pursuit through a wooded area that lasted for about an hour, Brumfield was captured by McComb police and Pike County sheriff's deputies.
At the time of the shooting, Brumfield was reportedly out on bond for a previous charge of accessory after the fact in connection with a homicide in Gulfport. The house where the fatal shooting of Andra Cotton occurred had been the scene of a police standoff just a week prior, related to another shooting incident. In that earlier event, Brandon Celestine's twin brother, Brenton, was arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a woman. Furthermore, in the weeks following Cotton's death, his girlfriend was also found shot to death in a separate incident.
