In the late spring of 2021, the community of Laurel, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 17-year-old Jakeyleous Mykel Smith. A Black male, Smith became the victim of a fatal shooting in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 30th. The incident unfolded in the 300 block of West 11th Street, a residential area that was soon to become the scene of a homicide investigation.
Laurel Police Department officers were dispatched to the location at approximately 1:30 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Immediate medical attention was rendered, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jakeyleous Mykel Smith succumbed to his injuries, leaving a family and a community to grapple with the sudden loss of a young life.
The subsequent investigation into Smith's death moved swiftly. Within days, law enforcement officials identified a person of interest, leading to the arrest of 18-year-old Vontrell McGill. In connection with the shooting, McGill was formally charged with first-degree murder. Following his arrest, a judge set his bond at $1 million. The case was then bound over to a grand jury for further legal proceedings, marking the beginning of the judicial process to bring closure to the tragic death of Jakeyleous Mykel Smith.
