In the late spring of 2021, the community of Laurel, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 17-year-old Jakeyleous Mykel Smith. A Black male, Smith became the victim of a fatal shooting in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 30th. The incident unfolded in the 300 block of West 11th Street, a residential area that was soon to become the scene of a homicide investigation.
