On a late Saturday night in October 2021, gunfire erupted at Waxhaw Park, located about six miles north of Rosedale, Mississippi, forever altering the course of several young lives. The Bolivar County Sheriff's Office received a call about the shooting shortly after midnight on Sunday, October 24th. Upon their arrival, deputies encountered a large gathering at the park and a chaotic scene.
Amid the confusion, two young Black men were found to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Rayshawn Jackson, a 21-year-old from Cleveland, Mississippi, was one of the victims. The other was 20-year-old Jamarcus Black of Shaw. Despite the efforts of first responders, both men were pronounced dead at the scene by the Bolivar County Coroner. The violence of that night also left a third individual, 24-year-old Ricktavious Jackson of Cleveland, wounded with multiple gunshot wounds to his left leg. He was transported to Bolivar Medical Center for treatment.
In the days that followed the deadly shooting, law enforcement began the arduous task of piecing together the events that transpired at Waxhaw Park. The investigation led authorities to a suspect, and on Tuesday, October 26th, Quincy Lewis, a 21-year-old from Cleveland, was apprehended in Oxford, Mississippi, by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Oxford Police Department.
Following his arrest, Quincy Lewis was charged with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. When Lewis appeared before a judge, he was denied bond. While one arrest was made, the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the second homicide that occurred that night, appealing to the public for any information that could help bring clarity and justice for the victims and their families.
