In the early hours of a Sunday morning, the life of 20-year-old Jamarcus Black, a Black male from Shaw, Mississippi, was tragically cut short by gunfire. The fatal incident occurred shortly after midnight on October 24, 2021, during a large gathering at Waxhaw Park, located about six miles north of Rosedale in Bolivar County. When deputies from the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they discovered a chaotic situation with two young men having been shot multiple times.
Jamarcus Black was one of the two victims pronounced dead at the scene by the Bolivar County Coroner. The other deceased individual was identified as 21-year-old Rayshawn Jackson of Cleveland. A third man, Ricktavious Jackson, 24, also from Cleveland, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his leg and was treated at Bolivar Medical Center. The violent outburst shattered the late-night gathering, leaving two families to mourn the loss of their loved ones and another to grapple with the aftermath of serious injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led to a suspect. On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, just two days after the shooting, 21-year-old Quincy Lewis of Cleveland was apprehended in Oxford, Mississippi. His arrest was a coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Service and the Oxford Police Department. Lewis was subsequently charged with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shootings at Waxhaw Park. Following his arrest, a judge denied him bond.
At the time of Lewis's arrest, the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office stated that they were still actively investigating the second homicide that occurred that night.
