In the quiet community of Plantersville, Mississippi, the life of 39-year-old Justin Mayfield was abruptly ended on December 22, 2021. On that Wednesday afternoon, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Department responded to a call at a residence on County Road 746. Inside, they discovered Mayfield in a bathroom, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The scene of the crime suggested a deeper story, as investigators from both the Lee County Sheriff's Department and the North
Mississippi Narcotics Unit uncovered a significant amount of cash, marijuana, and several weapons within the home. This discovery pointed towards a possible motive for the violent encounter. An initial lead in the investigation came from witness statements describing a white Dodge Charger at the scene around the time of the shooting. The vehicle was reportedly occupied by two men, one white and one of mixed race.
The investigation into Mayfield's death was extensive, leading to the identification of multiple suspects. It was determined that armed individuals had broken into Mayfield's home with the intention of robbing him. A struggle ensued, during which Mayfield fought back against his intruders but was ultimately shot and killed. The assailants then fled the scene with stolen cash and narcotics.
In the months that followed, law enforcement made a series of arrests in connection with the homicide. The first three suspects taken into custody and charged with capital murder were Gavin Jeffers, 28, of West Point, Christopher Clayton, 21, of Fulton, and Shanery Hampton, 29, of Macon. The investigation continued, leading to the apprehension of a fourth suspect, 32-year-old Anthony Dixon of Guntown. A fifth individual, 31-year-old Dartonio Pinson of Shannon, was also arrested and charged with capital murder. Authorities indicated that more arrests could be forthcoming as they continued to piece together the events that led to Justin Mayfield's tragic death.
