In a tragic turn of events on May 20, 2022, 61-year-old Sherralann Patricia Longmire was found deceased in her Columbia, Mississippi, home, the victim of a fatal shooting. The discovery of her body preceded a tense and prolonged standoff with law enforcement, ultimately leading to the arrest of her brother, Tony Carleith Wilson, then 58, in connection with her death.
The situation unfolded when officers were dispatched to a residence on Margaret Street for a welfare check.
Upon their arrival, they were met with gunfire from inside the house. This initiated an 11-hour standoff, during which Wilson is reported to have fired at officers on multiple occasions. The lengthy and dangerous ordeal concluded with Wilson's surrender and arrest in the early hours of the following morning. It was after the standoff ended that officers were able to enter the home and tragically discovered Ms. Longmire's body.
Following his arrest, Tony Carleith Wilson was charged with murder in the death of his sister and four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer for firing at law enforcement during the standoff. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation took the lead on the officer-involved shooting aspect of the case. In the subsequent months, the legal process moved forward, and in October 2022, a Marion County grand jury indicted Wilson on the charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Sherralann Longmire was remembered as a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother who had dedicated her life to the healthcare field, first as a respiratory therapist and later as a registered nurse.
