On October 13, 2022, Travis Jones, an 18-year-old senior at Lake High School, was shot and killed in his vehicle near the intersection of Old Highway 80 and Johnson Town Road in Lake, Mississippi. A standout defensive lineman for the school's football team, Jones had recently been named player of the week and had recorded 20 tackles during the season. The shooting occurred just after 3:00 p.m., not far from his home.
Jones was struck in the head by one of what authorities described as 30 to 40 shots fired from different guns. His truck then ran off the road into a wooded area, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 13-year-old male at a nearby home was also struck by gunfire, sustaining a leg injury for which he was treated at a hospital.
The investigation into the shooting, led by the Scott County Sheriff's Office, quickly led to the identification of suspects. Initially, two 16-year-olds were taken into custody and charged with murder. An 18-year-old was also brought in as a person of interest. Investigators suggested that a 'past feud' may have been a motive for the shooting. Captain Willie Anderson of the Scott County Sheriff's Department also indicated that another person who was with Jones might have been a target. The investigation also explored a possible connection to a drive-by shooting that occurred at the home of a coach where players had gathered hours after Jones was killed.
Ultimately, three teenagers were charged with the murder of Travis Jones. They were identified as 16-year-old Tyrus Tillman of Lake, 18-year-old Cenarius Morgan of Forest, and 19-year-old Joshua Nicks, also of Forest. Scott County Sheriff Mike Lee stated that authorities believed these three individuals were the ones who fired shots at the vehicle Jones was driving. The investigation remained ongoing as authorities sought to speak with others who may have been present during the incident.
