In the early morning hours of October 13, 2001, Pawnee County Sheriff Dwight Calvin Woodrell, Jr., a 36-year-old male, was on his way home after executing a search warrant in another part of the county. His lifelong ambition was to serve as sheriff, a dream he had realized at a young age. On this particular morning, his path took him past Spess Drilling Co. in Cleveland, Oklahoma, a business that had been the target of several recent burglaries.
