In the summer of 2015, the life of 35-year-old Laura East was tragically cut short in a violent act that unfolded in the parking lot of the Norman Regional HealthPlex in Norman, Oklahoma. On July 17th, Laura was at the hospital visiting her mother when she was confronted by her estranged husband, Darrel East. The encounter, which began with a request to talk, quickly escalated into a fatal shooting.
In the months leading up to that day, Laura had sought legal protection from Darrel,
filing for a protective order on June 18, 2015. She reported that he had been harassing her at her workplace, exhibiting aggressive and intimidating behavior. Despite her fears, the protective order was dismissed shortly after it was filed. Family members later recounted that Laura was actively trying to distance herself from him and had no intentions of reconciling.
On that fateful afternoon, Darrel approached Laura at the hospital and asked her to step outside to speak with him, promising to leave her alone afterward. Once they were in the parking lot, he shot her multiple times before turning the gun on himself. Both Laura and Darrel were rushed to the emergency room, but neither survived their injuries. The police investigation concluded that Darrel East was the sole suspect in Laura's death in a clear case of murder-suicide.
Laura Maxine East, born on May 2, 1980, was a mother to a son and two daughters. She was employed as a Medical Assistant at the Norman VA Center. Her family remembered her as a devoted mother who cherished spending time with her children, especially taking them to football and basketball games.
