In the summer of 2015, a fatal encounter at a convenience store in Owasso, Oklahoma, cut short the life of 26-year-old Emmett Tyler Wood. On the evening of July 24th, Wood was at the Kum & Go on 86th Street North when he was shot and killed. The incident stemmed from an attempted robbery that escalated into a violent struggle.
Three individuals, Jacob 'Jake' Pepper, Michael 'A.J.' Hatcher, and Antonio 'Tony' Pruitt, were implicated in the events that led to Wood's death.
According to reports, Pepper, who was under the influence of methamphetamine, confronted Wood and demanded money. When Wood resisted, a physical altercation ensued inside a pickup truck, during which Pepper fatally shot him. After being shot, Wood either fell or was pushed out of the vehicle in the parking lot of the gas station. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Law enforcement officials quickly launched an investigation that led to the arrests of Pepper, Hatcher, and Pruitt, who were all initially charged with first-degree murder on July 30, 2015. However, as the legal process unfolded, the cases against Hatcher and Pruitt were dismissed in December of that year due to a lack of sufficient evidence to proceed with a murder conviction.
Ultimately, Jacob Pepper was the only individual to be convicted in connection with Emmett Wood's murder. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. In May 2016, a judge sentenced Pepper to 33 years in prison for his role in the deadly shooting.
