his own 17-year-old sister, Kylie Friend. According to court documents, Kylie had been angered by her brother after he had kicked her out of his house. This anger allegedly led her to conspire with two acquaintances, Brandon Lee Jones and John Kevin Rather Jr., to rob her brother of money and drugs. The plan turned deadly on that January night when Jones and Rather went to Caleb's residence to carry out the robbery. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, Jones allegedly attempted to pistol-whip Caleb, but the firearm discharged, ending his life.
In the aftermath of the killing, Ottawa County prosecutors brought serious charges against the trio. Kylie Friend, Brandon Lee Jones, and John Kevin Rather Jr. were all charged with first-degree murder, conjoint robbery, and conspiracy to commit conjoint robbery.
