On the morning of February 26, 2016, 30-year-old Nathan Scoggins, a devoted father, son, and brother, was at his mother's home in Longtown, Oklahoma. Described by loved ones as a true cowboy with a passion for working with horses, he had been job hunting during the week. That morning, his mother, Melanie, allowed him to sleep in while she took his son to school around 7:50 a.m.
When Melanie returned to her house at approximately 8:40 a.m., she discovered her son lying on his back in the
middle of the kitchen floor. Nathan had been shot. Investigators were initially uncertain if the death was a suicide, but their perspective shifted upon discovering an initial bullet wound in his neck, leading them to classify the case as a homicide.
During the investigation of the scene, key pieces of evidence were recovered from the kitchen. A stolen. 22-caliber pistol was found on the kitchen counter. However, further examination of the crime scene revealed a bullet of a much larger caliber, suggesting the involvement of another weapon. The investigation also uncovered that a burglary had occurred at the residence on Monday, February 22, 2016, just days before the murder. Several items were stolen during this break-in, and authorities believe the burglary is almost certainly connected to Nathan's death.
Despite these leads, and the fact that his girlfriend was reportedly in the house at the time of the shooting, she was unable to provide a description of the perpetrator or perpetrators. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Nathan Scoggins, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an unsolved homicide, with his family continuing to seek justice.
