In the quiet town of Mannford, Oklahoma, the life of 61-year-old Ronald 'Rocky' Bethel was brought to a violent and tragic end on September 20, 2016. Bethel was fatally shot outside of his residence, a crime that quickly prompted a thorough investigation by local law enforcement and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Just five days after the shooting, on September 25, 2016, the OSBI, in conjunction with the Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force, apprehended Richard Dylan Vawter. The 34-year-old from Jennings, Oklahoma, was taken into custody in the nearby city of Sand Springs. An arrest warrant had been issued for Vawter, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Bethel's death.
Following his arrest, Vawter was booked into the Creek County Jail. A bond was set at $5 million, reflecting the severity of the charges brought against him. The community was left to grapple with the violent loss of one of its members as the legal process against the accused began to unfold.
