In the late hours of a Friday night in El Reno, Oklahoma, the life of 37-year-old Ryan Randall Johnson was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On September 14, 2018, Johnson was at a local gas station when he was fatally shot. The male victim was a lifetime resident of the El Reno area and a graduate of El Reno High School.
The incident, which unfolded at Ruddy's Quick Stop on West Elm Street, was captured by surveillance cameras.
The footage showed another man, later identified as Zachary Huber, pull up in a black Chevrolet Impala. Huber then exited his vehicle and began firing at Johnson's car, shattering the windows before moving closer and shooting Johnson multiple times. The attack appeared to be random, as investigators could find no connection between the victim and the shooter.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, courageous bystanders attempted to intervene. His trial took a bizarre turn when, on the second day of proceedings in September 2021, he refused to leave his jail cell and attend court. The judge ruled that Huber had waived his right to be present, and the trial continued without him. The jury ultimately found him guilty of the murder of Ryan Johnson. Three years after the fatal shooting, the court sentenced Zachary Huber to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a devastating and random act of violence that shook the community of El Reno.
