In the early morning hours of November 1, 2018, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the life of 18-year-old Kayson Toliver was tragically cut short. A senior at Beggs High School, Kayson was known as a standout running back on the football team and a member of the National Honor Society. His infectious smile and good-hearted nature made him a well-liked young man within his community.
On that fateful morning, as Kayson slept in his bed, his mother, Amy Leann Hall, entered his room and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
After taking her son's life, Hall proceeded to the bedroom of her two daughters. She shot her 16-year-old daughter, Kloee Toliver, and her 14-year-old daughter in the head as they slept. Kloee was critically injured and declared brain-dead a few days later, ultimately succumbing to her injuries. The youngest daughter miraculously survived after a bullet grazed her head and neck. She managed to escape to a bathroom and bravely de-escalated the situation, convincing her mother to give up the pistol. An 18-year-old friend who was sharing Kayson's room was unharmed.
Following the horrific events, Amy Hall fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that reached over 100 miles per hour before she was apprehended. During questioning, Hall claimed her actions were an attempt to protect her children from their father, her estranged husband, with whom she was engaged in a bitter custody dispute. She alleged he was abusive, a claim that was part of a contentious two-year legal battle.
Amy Leann Hall was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of shooting with intent to kill. In November 2022, she pleaded guilty to the charges. Subsequently, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring she would spend the remainder of her life incarcerated for the devastating loss she inflicted upon her family and community.
