The series of events unfolded on July 30, 2021, when Calera Police, alongside the FBI and Choctaw Tribal Police, were called to the
family's home. There, they discovered a harrowing scene. Leanne's mother, 31-year-old Tiffani Hill, and her husband, 42-year-old John Donato, were both found deceased from gunshot wounds. Leanne was found critically injured, also suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The infant was immediately airlifted to a hospital in Dallas, Texas, where she fought for her life over the weekend before succumbing to her injuries.
Investigations by the FBI, who took charge of the case due to the incident occurring on tribal land, revealed a grim narrative. John Donato was identified as the suspect, having shot his wife and daughter before turning the gun on himself. The motive for this tragic act is believed to be rooted in domestic conflict. Tiffani Hill had recently won a significant amount of money in the California lottery, and the couple had moved to Calera shortly after. Relatives indicated that Hill was attempting to leave the relationship, a notoriously dangerous time for victims of domestic abuse. The couple's three other children were present in the home at the time of the incident but were physically unharmed. A GoFundMe was later established to help with funeral expenses and the care and relocation of the surviving children.
