In the small town of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, the life of 15-year-old Luke Edward Strickland was tragically cut short on the evening of Thursday, April 7, 2022. The male teenager, a freshman at Kingfisher High School, was known for his love of life and sports.
That evening, police responded to a call in the 1000 block of 9th Street and found a man performing CPR on Luke, who was lying on the ground near a truck with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was unresponsive, and despite the efforts of the man and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical services, Luke succumbed to his injury. The initial belief, as reported by authorities, was that the shooting was a tragic accident, possibly self-inflicted.
However, the investigation into Luke's death took a dramatic turn. An 18-year-old named Patrick Roedel, who was present at the scene and visibly upset, was later charged with first-degree manslaughter. It was revealed that Roedel initially claimed Luke had accidentally shot himself. This narrative changed when investigators discovered a video on Luke's phone. The video reportedly showed Roedel pointing an empty gun at Luke and pulling the trigger multiple times.
Confronted with this evidence, Roedel's account of the events shifted. He admitted to police that he had been pretending to shoot the gun. At some point, he had reloaded the firearm and, believing the safety was engaged, pointed it at Luke one last time and pulled the trigger. The shot struck Luke in the chest, leading to his untimely death. Luke's family had expressed from the beginning that they did not believe he would have taken his own life, stating that he 'loved life too much.' The arrest of Patrick Roedel followed, bringing a new and somber clarity to the circumstances surrounding the final moments of Luke Strickland's life.
