In the summer of 2022, a wave of violence struck the small city of Altus, Oklahoma, leaving two teenagers dead and a community in shock. On Saturday, June 18, police were called to an area near Newland Drive after receiving multiple reports of gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of 18-year-old Steven Jackson. A second victim, a 16-year-old male, was found deceased about 200 yards away from Jackson.
Both had been shot.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led law enforcement to two suspects, themselves just teenagers. A few days later, on a Thursday evening, police arrested 18-year-old Dewan Brown. At the time of his arrest, Brown was found in possession of a stolen firearm. The following morning, a 16-year-old juvenile was also taken into custody in connection with the murders.
Both Dewan Brown and the unnamed juvenile were subsequently booked into the Jackson County Jail. They each face two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Steven Jackson and the other teen. The bodies of the victims were transported to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy as the investigation continued into the tragic loss of two young lives.
