On April 20, 2018, Randy Loze, a 49-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found deceased in his home on 11th Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. A relative had alerted the police, and upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Loze lying face-down, the victim of a single gunshot wound to his head. For two decades, he had been a loyal and dedicated employee at Extrutech Plastics, Inc. in Manitowoc.
He was known for his enjoyment of the outdoors, his love for playing golf, and as an avid fan of NASCAR.
The investigation into the homicide quickly identified a suspect: Felicia M. Kuehnl, the victim's 24-year-old stepdaughter. After fatally shooting her stepfather, Kuehnl drove to the home of a relative and confessed to the crime. She then fled the area in a vehicle that was registered to Randy Loze. Her attempt to escape initiated a high-speed pursuit with law enforcement officers. The chase concluded with her apprehension by the police. During her arrest, she reportedly expressed suicidal ideations, stating that she should have shot herself instead.
Felicia M. Kuehnl was subsequently charged with several serious offenses, including first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, and fleeing from an officer. As the case proceeded through the legal system, it went to trial. The court found Kuehnl guilty of first-degree intentional homicide. However, she was also found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, a legal outcome often referred to as the "insanity defense."
