In the early hours of a cold Friday morning in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the life of David Posey, a 39-year-old Black/African American man, came to a tragic and violent end. On February 5, 2021, at approximately 2 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of South Marr and Sheboygan streets. Inside the vehicle, they found David Posey, unresponsive but still breathing. He was the sole occupant of the car which had sustained significant damage after striking a light pole.
Initially treated for injuries from the crash at a local hospital, it was soon discovered that Posey was suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was then airlifted to Theda Care Regional Medical Center for further treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. An autopsy would later reveal that a bullet had struck an artery, leading to his death. The circumstances surrounding the crash and the discovery of the gunshot wound immediately pointed to foul play, launching a homicide investigation into Posey's death.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a residence on 5th Street, which was searched in connection with the case. Two individuals from Fond du Lac were taken into custody: a 30-year-old man held on a probation hold and a 29-year-old woman held on obstruction charges. The man was identified as Denell Logan. It was later determined that the events leading to Posey's death began with a drug transaction. An altercation broke out during an attempted cocaine purchase from Posey, which resulted in Logan shooting him in the leg. After being shot, Posey fled in his vehicle, which he subsequently crashed a few blocks away.
Denell Logan was initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of THC. He was ultimately convicted of first-degree reckless homicide and, in October 2022, was sentenced to 35 years in prison, to be followed by 10 years of extended supervision. A woman, Callie Bender, was also charged in connection with the incident for the straw purchase of the firearm used in the shooting, aiding a felon, and possession of THC. She received a two-year prison sentence for her involvement.
