In the late afternoon of October 29, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the calm near the downtown bus transfer station in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, leading to the tragic death of 16-year-old Kilek Mack, a Black male. The incident began with a physical altercation between Mack and another teenager, 16-year-old Armani Jackson of Milwaukee.
Surveillance footage from the scene showed Mack sitting in a bus shelter when Jackson arrived with a 17-year-old female companion, Akeeyla Love. After repeatedly reaching into his waistband, Jackson initiated a fight with Mack. The struggle moved into a nearby alley, where the two fell to the ground. When Mack stood up and stepped back, Jackson drew a handgun and fired a single shot from approximately five feet away. As Mack tried to move away, Jackson fired two more shots from a distance of about ten feet, causing Mack to collapse.
Emergency services arrived to find Mack with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported first to a local hospital and then to Children's Wisconsin Hospital in Wauwatosa, where he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later confirmed that he had been shot three times. Following the shooting, Jackson fled the scene on foot.
An investigation was immediately launched, and authorities began a search for Jackson. He was apprehended in Milwaukee on November 3, 2021. Jackson was initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide. In a plea deal, the charge was amended to second-degree intentional homicide, to which he pleaded no contest. In June 2023, at the age of 18, Jackson was sentenced to 35 years in prison, to be followed by 20 years of extended supervision.
Two other individuals were also charged in connection with the incident for assisting Jackson after the shooting. Akeeyla Love and her mother, Sandra Love, were both charged with harboring or aiding a felon. Akeeyla Love was sentenced to three years of probation, while Sandra Love received a sentence of one year in prison followed by two years of extended supervision. A 37-year-old Milwaukee woman was also charged with obstructing the investigation.
