Javarius Fowler, a 16-year-old Black/African American male, lost his life on a Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2022, inside a McDonald's restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The tragic event unfolded at the fast-food establishment located near the intersection of 49th and Hampton Avenue, where an argument between teenagers escalated into a fatal burst of violence.
Fowler, along with three other people, had entered the restaurant and was seated when another group, including 14-year-old Robert Johnson and 15-year-old William Harrison Jr., came inside.
Surveillance footage from within the restaurant captured the harrowing moments that led to the shooting. The video showed Harrison approaching Javarius Fowler and pointing a handgun at his head. Fowler reacted by pushing the weapon away, stepping back, and drawing his own firearm. In the ensuing chaos, a rapid exchange of gunfire erupted between the teens. All three of the boys were armed. The incident, which lasted only seconds, was the result of an argument, though the specific nature of the dispute was not detailed in court documents.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Javarius Fowler was found to have been shot in the chest and back and succumbed to his injuries in the restaurant's doorway as he tried to flee. William Harrison Jr. was shot in the head and died at a hospital two days later. Robert Johnson, the third teenager involved in the exchange of fire, sustained gunshot wounds to his neck, armpit, chest, and groin but survived.
Robert Johnson, who was 14 at the time of the incident, was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with Javarius Fowler's death. In January 2024, Johnson, then 16, pleaded guilty to the charge. A judge sentenced him to 13 years in prison, to be followed by 10 years of extended supervision. During the sentencing, Johnson expressed remorse and apologized to the victims' families.
