In an alley in Milwaukee on August 15, 2022, a dispute over a parking space escalated into a fatal confrontation that ended the life of 46-year-old Joseph L. Jones. The incident unfolded behind Jones's apartment near 76th and Vienna, where he confronted a man who had parked in his rented spot. That man was later identified as 23-year-old Breyon Wright.
Leading up to the shooting, Jones and Wright were reportedly engaged in a loud and escalating argument that lasted for about 20 to 30
minutes, according to witnesses. One person who was present heard the two men "talking loudly," and another described the conversation as seeming to escalate with rising tensions. At one point, a witness heard Jones yell, "Put it down!" Shortly after, the sound of four to five gunshots from what was believed to be two different guns echoed through the alley. When police arrived, they found Jones lying in the alley with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 9mm handgun was found in his right hand.
Following the shooting, Wright fled the scene, but his escape was captured by a nearby surveillance camera. The video showed a man in dark clothing running from the alley, and a clear image of his face helped investigators identify him as Wright. Fingerprints were also recovered from the SUV that Wright had allegedly left behind in the disputed parking space.
Breyon Wright was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of felony bail jumping. During an interview with detectives, he denied any involvement in the homicide. According to Jones's sister, her brother had previous run-ins with Wright concerning the same parking space on at least five or six prior occasions. She described her brother as being at the prime of his life, having started a business and gotten engaged, and lamented that his life was lost over something so trivial.
