On a quiet Sunday morning, November 29, 2009, the life of 42-year-old Caucasian male, Gregory James Richards, a dedicated police officer, was tragically cut short in a calculated and violent ambush in Parkland, Washington. Officer Richards, along with three of his colleagues from the Lakewood Police Department, Sergeant Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens and Tina DeLong-Griswold, had gathered at a local coffee shop to catch up on paperwork before starting their shifts.
The morning calm was shattered when a lone gunman, later identified as Maurice Clemmons, entered the establishment with the sole purpose of attacking law enforcement.
The attack was swift and brutal. Clemmons walked towards the officers and opened fire, fatally shooting Sergeant Renninger, Officer Owens, and Officer DeLong-Griswold as they sat at a table. Officer Richards, who had been ordering at the counter, immediately responded to the gunfire and confronted the assailant. In the ensuing struggle, a physical altercation took place. Richards managed to shoot and wound Clemmons, but was ultimately overpowered and fatally shot with his own service weapon.
The brazen assault triggered a massive two-day manhunt for Clemmons. The search concluded when a Seattle police officer spotted a stolen vehicle matching the description of the one Clemmons was believed to be using. As the officer approached, he recognized Clemmons, who then attempted to flee. The officer pursued and, after a brief confrontation where Clemmons failed to comply with commands, the suspect was shot and killed. It was later discovered that an accomplice, Darcus Allen, had been waiting in a truck for Clemmons and drove him away from the initial crime scene. Allen was later arrested and faced legal consequences for his role in the events.
