On an April afternoon in Arlington, Washington, a young Caucasian mother named Jessica Jones, aged 25, was found in the garage of her boyfriend's grandparents' home with a gunshot wound to her head. The incident occurred on April 8, 2014. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but tragically succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Her death was officially ruled a homicide by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office.
Initially, Jessica's boyfriend, Daniel Rinker, concocted a story for the police, claiming that she had been the victim of a random drive-by shooting. He told investigators that an unknown person in a dark blue Dodge Neon had fired the fatal shot. However, as Arlington police detectives delved into the case, inconsistencies in his account began to surface. Neighbors reported hearing yelling followed by a single gunshot, and a witness saw Rinker running from the garage and discarding an object into a nearby field. A search of the area uncovered a silver revolver, which appeared to be the same one Rinker was seen holding in a photograph on his Facebook page.
The investigation revealed a history of domestic violence, with witnesses stating that Rinker had previously threatened to kill Jessica. It is believed that he was paranoid she would leave him, especially if he were to be imprisoned again, given his five prior felony convictions. Faced with the mounting evidence against him, Daniel Rinker's story crumbled. In December 2015, the 26-year-old admitted his guilt and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 28 years in prison for the death of Jessica Jones. During the investigation into her murder, detectives also uncovered evidence that Rinker was involved in a sexual relationship with an underage girl, leading to additional charges of second-degree rape of a child.
