The circumstances of her death are deeply
troubling, as the perpetrator was her own 19-year-old son, Payton Michaels. The fatal incident occurred in the 1900 block of 200th Street NE, where Amanda was shot multiple times during an argument with her son. This violent end was preceded by a history of escalating fear and attempts to seek protection through the legal system. In the weeks leading up to her death, Amanda had expressed grave concerns for her safety and the safety of her other two children, a 13-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son.
On August 26, 2024, Payton had reportedly pointed a gun at his mother and threatened to kill her, which led to his arrest for felony harassment and second-degree assault. Following this, Amanda filed for a protection order, detailing past threats and violence from her son. A temporary order was granted, but a series of events in early September led to a tragic outcome. A judge agreed to release Payton from jail on September 6, and a subsequent court hearing for a permanent restraining order was missed by Amanda, resulting in its denial just days before she was killed.
Following the shooting, Payton Michaels fled the scene, prompting a police pursuit. Approximately 15 minutes after the incident, sheriff's deputies located and pursued his vehicle on Highway 9.
