In the spring of 2015, the life of 17-year-old Gage Bruce was cut tragically short. On the evening of May 25th, multiple gunshots echoed through Maiben Park in Burlington, Washington. When police arrived at the scene around 8:24 p.m., they discovered shell casings and bullet holes in the wall of the community center, but the victim was no longer there.
Gage, a male, had been struck by the gunfire and was rushed to United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley by a group of six individuals who were with him at the park. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 9:22 p.m.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a conflict that had begun the previous night at a party. An altercation erupted, allegedly stemming from a gang-related dispute. During this earlier confrontation, threats of violence were made. The tensions from that party are believed to have spilled over into the events at Maiben Park the following day, culminating in the fatal shooting. Investigators believe Gage Bruce may not have been the intended target of the violence that erupted.
More than a year after the incident, in July 2016, an arrest was made in connection with Gage's death. Saul Cruz-Garcia, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged as an adult with conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree. Prosecutors alleged that while Cruz-Garcia may not have been the one to fire the fatal shot, he was instrumental in organizing the shooting. The investigation suggested that multiple people may have been involved in the incident, though witnesses were reportedly not fully cooperative with the police. Saul Cruz-Garcia pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
