On a December evening in 2015, a domestic dispute in a home near Lacey, Washington, escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter. Feagaiga Tausaga Leiataua, a 30-year-old male of Samoan descent, was at the center of a three-hour standoff with law enforcement that ended with his death. The events of December 13th began to unfold when deputies from the Thurston County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on 49th Loop Southeast following a report of a stabbing.
Upon their arrival,
deputies found a 27-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds. The injured man identified his cousin, Feagaiga "Nephi" Leiataua, as his attacker. Leiataua, who had been living at the home with his three-year-old daughter since October, had retreated into a bedroom with the young child. As officers secured the area and got the stabbing victim's parents out of the house, the situation inside grew more tense. Leiataua was reportedly holding his daughter as a shield and threatening her with a knife to her throat.
As negotiations failed and concern for the child's immediate safety mounted, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office SWAT team was called to the scene. For three hours, law enforcement attempted to de-escalate the situation. However, due to the imminent threat to the child's life, a SWAT marksman fired a single shot, fatally wounding Leiataua. He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. His daughter was physically unharmed and was released to her mother. The officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in such incidents. Friends and colleagues of Leiataua, a talented Polynesian tattoo artist, expressed shock at the violent turn of events, describing him as a gentle and sweet man who adored his daughter.
