In the fall of 2016, the life of 18-year-old Dakota Tyree Walker was tragically cut short in what investigators would come to describe as an "execution-style" murder. On October 20, 2016, a woman walking her dog in the remote Capitol Forest, about 10 miles southwest of Olympia, Washington, made a grim discovery near the entrance of the Margaret McKenny Campground. The body of a young man, later identified through fingerprints as Dakota Tyree Walker, was found to have been left there.
An autopsy would later confirm that Walker, who was originally from Los Angeles but had been traveling frequently, died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Thurston County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the death of the male teenager. It became apparent to investigators that Walker had been killed elsewhere and his body had been transported to the forest. As detectives delved into Walker's recent activities, a narrative began to form suggesting that the young man had become entangled in a dangerous situation. It is believed that Walker had become weary of a lifestyle involving criminal activity and had documented burglaries and identity theft allegedly committed by his associates. Investigators theorize that Walker's intention to distance himself from these crimes may have been the motive for his murder, with his killers wanting to ensure his silence.
Within a week of the discovery of Walker's body, the investigation led to two suspects, 29-year-old Vincent L. Garlock and 31-year-old Jonathan Ackerman, who also used several aliases. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, located and arrested both men without incident near an animal clinic in Olympia. During questioning, both Garlock and Ackerman reportedly admitted to being present at the time of Walker's death but each pointed the finger at the other as the one who pulled the trigger. Prosecutors would later file charges of aggravated first-degree murder against the pair, alleging that they had lured Walker to the forest with the intent to kill him.
