Lana J. Carlson, a 49-year-old Caucasian female, died on February 26, 2016, in a tragic event that unfolded in a rural Mason County home near Belfair, Washington. On that Friday morning, authorities were alerted to a horrific scene when Lana's husband, 51-year-old David Wayne Campbell, contacted a sheriff's office supervisor to say he had done something terrible and was suicidal.
This call initiated a tense standoff with law enforcement that would last for hours and end in further tragedy.
When deputies arrived at the residence on Northeast Horseshoe Drive, they established contact with Campbell, who was barricaded inside. During the initial phase of the confrontation, a 12-year-old girl, a relative of Campbell, managed to flee the home to safety. For approximately three hours, negotiators worked to convince Campbell to surrender peacefully. However, their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. After introducing chemical agents into the home, Campbell emerged from the residence, yelled at the officers, and then fatally shot himself in their view.
Following the end of the standoff, law enforcement officers searched the property, which contained multiple structures. In a chicken coop on the grounds, they made a devastating discovery. They found the bodies of Lana J. Carlson and her two teenage sons, 16-year-old Quinn and 18-year-old Tory Carlson. Lana had adopted the boys from Kazakhstan before her marriage to Campbell. The body of a fourth victim, 68-year-old neighbor Donna Reed, was also found in the same location. The motive for the killings remains unclear.
The investigation concluded that David Wayne Campbell was the sole suspect in the deaths of his wife, her two sons, and their neighbor. As Campbell took his own life at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the murders. The case was classified as a murder-suicide. Lana was remembered as a loving mother who was making plans to start a food truck business in Bremerton, and her son Tory was a culinary arts student at Olympic College. The violent end to their lives left the local community in shock and mourning.
