Tabitha Apling, a 33-year-old woman from Federal Way, WA, tragically lost her life on September 24, 2016, in a harrowing incident involving her estranged boyfriend, Rashied Maceo Mitchell. The events leading to her death were marked by a history of domestic violence and legal battles. Mitchell, who had a long history of domestic violence convictions dating back to the early 1990s, was released from jail without bail on September 12, 2016, after being arrested for threatening Apling in front of
their two young children.
On the night of September 24, 2016, Mitchell confronted Apling at his mother's apartment in Federal Way. Despite a no-contact order that barred him from seeing Apling and their children, Mitchell attempted to reconcile with her. When Apling refused, Mitchell produced a handgun and threatened to kill her if anyone called 911. During the ensuing struggle, Mitchell shot Apling in the torso, causing her to collapse in a walk-in closet. Mitchell then turned the gun on himself, inflicting a life-threatening head wound.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a 911 call from Mitchell's mother, who had witnessed the confrontation. They found Apling unresponsive in the closet with a gunshot wound and a 9mm semiautomatic pistol nearby. Mitchell was found crawling out of the apartment, bleeding from his self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment and later charged with first-degree murder, felony violation of a no-contact order, and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
