On an autumn evening in Winlock, Washington, a family crisis escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter for 56-year-old Paul Wachter. The events of October 15, 2017, were set in motion earlier that day at a rural property on Tennessee Road. A distressing incident occurred when a 63-year-old woman, the sister of Paul and Jeffry Wachter, fell into a well.
Both brothers were present as emergency crews worked to rescue her.
During the tense rescue operation, a heated argument erupted between Paul and his older brother, 59-year-old Jeffry C. Wachter. The nature of their dispute is not publicly known, but it was severe enough that Jeffry was asked to leave the property, which he did. The woman was eventually rescued from the well and transported to a hospital for medical attention. A sense of calm might have been expected to settle over the family after the successful rescue.
However, a few hours later, Jeffry Wachter returned to the Tennessee Road home, this time armed with a handgun. He proceeded to shoot his younger brother, Paul, multiple times. After killing Paul, Jeffry then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. Law enforcement officials arriving at the scene found both brothers deceased in what they determined to be a murder-suicide. The Lewis County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Paul Wachter's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds, while Jeffry Wachter's death was ruled a suicide from a single gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that Jeffry Wachter was the sole perpetrator, and consequently, no arrests were made in connection with Paul Wachter's death.
