In the early hours of January 6, 2018, a night out in Seattle's White Center neighborhood turned tragic for Paul Tapia, a 45-year-old male. The evening ended in a fatal encounter in the parking lot of the Taradise Cafe, where Tapia and another man, Jose Garcia, were shot. Garcia, 51, died at the scene, while Tapia was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Tapia succumbed to a gunshot wound to his head and passed away.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly identified a suspect: 26-year-old Merle Charles Buchanan, who also went by the nickname "Chucky". Surveillance footage from outside the bar showed Buchanan in what appeared to be a friendly conversation with Tapia shortly before the shooting. The two men then walked over to Buchanan's vehicle, where an altercation occurred. Buchanan then shot Tapia in the face before turning the weapon on Garcia, shooting him in the head. The motive for the sudden and deadly violence remains unclear.
Following the shooting, Buchanan fled and became a fugitive. King County Sheriff's detectives launched a search for him, considering him armed and dangerous. In addition to the murder warrants, Buchanan also had an outstanding felony warrant for a domestic violence-no contact order. After nearly two months on the run, Merle Charles Buchanan surrendered to police on March 2, 2018. He was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. At trial, Buchanan claimed self-defense, but he was ultimately convicted for the murders of Paul Tapia and Jose Garcia.
