In the early morning hours of July 3, 2018, the life of Bishop F. McKinney, a 28-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in a residence in Lacey, Washington. Police were dispatched to a home on Cottage Lane Southeast around 3 a.m. following reports of a disturbance. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene in the living room. McKinney was found lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite the efforts of the responding officers and medics to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Inside the home with McKinney were a man and a woman. The man, identified as 24-year-old Terell L. D. Doyle, was questioned by authorities. An initial search of the residence led to Doyle's arrest for drug possession after heroin was discovered. As the investigation into McKinney's death progressed, Doyle became the primary suspect. He admitted to shooting McKinney but claimed it was an act of self-defense. The two had reportedly been in a physical altercation that escalated.
The dispute that led to the fatal shooting was allegedly over an iPad and a cellphone. According to Doyle's account, he and McKinney struggled over a gun, which he claimed belonged to McKinney, before the fatal shot was fired. In the aftermath of the investigation, Doyle was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. A judge later found probable cause for the charges, and his bail was set at $1 million. Police also sought to speak with two other individuals who had fled the home before their arrival. Bishop Franklin McKinney, who was born on November 29, 1989, was remembered by his family for his infectious laughter and caring personality.
