On a tragic day in June of 2019, the life of Dennis Overacker, a 61-year-old White/Caucasian male, was cut short in a wave of violence that swept through White Swan, Washington. The events of June 8 unfolded as a shooting rampage that claimed the lives of four other individuals, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with a senseless loss.
Overacker, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather known for his big heart and willingness to help others, was fatally shot during the incident.
The investigation into the mass homicide quickly led authorities to identify two primary suspects, James Dean Cloud and Donovan Quinn Carter Cloud. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed a harrowing sequence of events. The Cloud brothers were accused of a violent spree that included murder, kidnapping, and carjacking. In the aftermath of the killings, they were aided by two other individuals, Morris Jackson and Natasha Jackson, who assisted their attempt to flee the area. Their escape was short-lived as the stolen vehicle they were in broke down, leading to their eventual capture within 48 hours.
The case culminated in a federal indictment that charged James Dean Cloud and Donovan Quinn Carter Cloud with a multitude of crimes, including murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The indictment specifically accused both brothers in the shooting deaths of Overacker and another victim. In March 2022, a jury found James Dean Cloud guilty on four counts of first-degree murder, including the killing of Dennis Overacker. He was also convicted of kidnapping, carjacking, and assault. His accomplice and brother, Donovan Quinn Carter Cloud, entered a guilty plea to charges of carjacking and brandishing a firearm.
